What are tooth-coloured fillings?

Tooth-coloured fillings are made of composite resin, a tooth-coloured mixture of plastic and glass that has been used for many years. While they were originally only used for front teeth, modern improvements to the composition of the material mean composite is now very effective at filling teeth anywhere in the mouth.

Tooth-coloured composite fillings are now comparable with amalgam in both their strength and durability. They are long-lasting and offer an aesthetic and minimally invasive way to restore decayed, chipped, worn or broken teeth.

What are the benefits of composite fillings

  • Strong

Tooth-coloured fillings are strong and durable, and a long lasting way of returning your tooth to full function once more.

  • Aesthetic

The composite material can be matched to the exact shade of your natural tooth for a highly aesthetic repair.

  • Minimally Invasive

Less of your natural tooth needs to be removed before composite fillings are placed, emphasising the strength.

  • Easily Repaired

As composite bonds to itself and your tooth, it can be easily repaired in a short appointment if necessary.

What is involved in having a tooth filled?

We numb the affected area using local anaesthetic, and carefully remove the decayed part of your tooth before cleaning it thoroughly.

We apply an acidic gel to your tooth, which creates tiny holes to allow the composite material to bond to it and create an effective repair. This gel is then washed away and your tooth thoroughly dried.

We carefully colour match the composite material to the shade of your natural tooth, and apply it in layers, gradually building up the shape. We can mould the composite so it fits perfectly in your tooth cavity and feels comfortable.

We harden the composite material using a UV light and give it a professional polish so it looks and feels like a natural part of your tooth.

Frequently asked questions

  • Composite fillings are more difficult to place than silver fillings, so may take your dentist 15-20 minutes longer to complete. However, the treatment still takes place in a single appointment.

  • Many people are choosing to have tooth-coloured fillings over silver amalgam, mainly due to their highly aesthetic appeal and the fact they contain no metal. Tooth-coloured fillings also carry very similar qualities to amalgam fillings, with comparable strength and durability.

  • Tooth-coloured fillings blend beautifully into your natural teeth, and can’t be seen when you talk, laugh or smile. We ensure the composite material is colour matched to the shade of your natural teeth to give the most aesthetic repair possible.

  • If you no longer like the look of your silver fillings and wish to have a more natural looking option, we can replace the amalgam with composite material. The silver filling and any subsequent decay is fully removed for us to then follow the composite filling treatment process to give you a natural looking restoration. In some cases, this may not be possible, but we will talk through your options.

  • The best way to look after your tooth-coloured filling is to simply treat it as part of your natural tooth. Brush and floss twice a day to prevent decay forming, and visit your dentist for regular check up appointments.
